Apple has indeed acquired the domain name iCloud.com from Sweden-based hybrid cloud computing outfit Xcerion. Sources in position to know confirm that Apple bought the domain as GigaOm first reported Thursday, though they declined to say whether its rumored $4.5 million price tag was accurate.
Looks like Apple’s rumored new cloud service is slowly coming into full view…
If the news is true, there’s a reasonable likelihood that Apple’s subscription cloud service dubbed MobileMe might be re-branded as iCloud, fitting the company’s iNaming product scheme. Whether or not the iCloud service is connected to cloud iTunes or just a re-branded MobileMe remains to be seen.
Some publications like CNET have indicated that MobileMe either won’t be entirely free or will initially be free and later cost $20 a year for premium services, such as cloud storage and digital locker, as D9to5Mac reported last month.
